BRUGES 2006
SAND SCULPTURE FESTIVAL
01/08/2006 till 24/09/2006
When
I first heard about this festival it didn’ know what to think
about it. I honestly couldn’t decide wether I liked the concept
or not, which was all the motivation I needed to actually go an
try it.
What you see is a technical masterpiece, constructed by the skilful
hands of a team of 60 artists from the United States, Russia, China,
Great Britain, Spain, Italy, France and the Netherlands. It’s
incredible they managed to build the entire set in only three weeks!
At the start of the exposition you can see a short video which infotains
you about the construction of the set, which sand they use and how
they sculpt it. Believe me, you’ll want to know!
The theme, “Bruges, a story of more than a thousand years,”
features the most important episodes in the history of Bruges. It
became a mix of sagas and legends, traditions and folk tales of
Bruges. The pieces differ from gates (the Donkey Gate, the Blacksmith
Gate, the Cross Gate and the Ghent Gate), to churches (Church of
Our Lady, St. Savious’s Cathedral) to legends etc.
The
program book contains an inventory of the featured artworks, it
also contains a city map in order to conduct a true journey of discovery
through the very heart of Bruges, so you can see the figurants of
the festival in their real proportions.
To be honest, I don’t really get the idea of making replica’s
in sand, I keep thinking they might as well have made them in plastic.
The thing is, they didn’t. The experience of visiting this
festival is all about being amazed by the skill and patience of
the sculptors and about discovering beautiful, mysterious and funny
details in the sculpted landscapes.
The same organisation that’s behind this festival also organises
the Snow and Ice Sculpture Festival . Same concept, different material.
The theme for this year will be ‘Ice Age’. It runs from
Friday 24 November 2006 untill Sunday 14 January 2007 on the Station
Square of Bruges. Don't miss it!
